Edit HTML with AI: How htmlhost's Visual Editor Works

htmlhost.co·June 6, 2026·4 min read

Most tools that call themselves an "AI web editor" hand you a blank canvas or a proprietary drag-and-drop interface. You're building from scratch, inside their system.

htmlhost.co's AI editor is different. You bring your own HTML — any HTML — and the AI edits it in place. Click any element, describe what you want, and watch the change stream in live.

This guide explains exactly how it works, which AI models power it, and why the combination of element selection + instant deploy makes it unlike anything else available today.

What makes this AI HTML editor different

There are a few things about the editor that are genuinely novel:

  1. You can target any element on a live rendered page. Not a component tree. Not an abstract layer. The actual rendered element, in context.
  2. The AI receives real context. When you select an element, the editor sends its full HTML, its computed styles, its parent section, and your instruction to the AI. The result is accurate — not generic.
  3. Edits stream live. The preview iframe updates as tokens arrive. You see the change happening before the AI finishes writing it.
  4. After you're done, you deploy with one click. Your updated HTML is live on a real URL in under 3 seconds.

How to use the AI editor: a step-by-step walkthrough

Step 1: Open the editor and add your HTML

Navigate to htmlhost.co/new. You'll see the Monaco code editor on the left and a live preview iframe on the right. Paste any HTML, drop a file, or start from one of the templates.

The editor supports full multi-page projects — drop a directory and get a file tree, tab bar, and per-file editing. For this walkthrough, let's use a single HTML file.

Step 2: Activate AI mode

Click the ✦ sparkle button in the toolbar. The cursor changes. Now when you hover over the live preview, elements highlight as you move over them — a thin blue outline shows what the AI would target if you clicked.

Semantic containers (sections, articles, headers, footers) also get a faint dashed outline showing their parent grouping, giving the AI extra context about the page structure.

Step 3: Click to select an element

Click the element you want to change. The editor snaps a selection — you'll see it highlighted in the code panel. At the bottom of the screen, the AI chat panel activates, pre-filled with a context snippet showing what was selected.

Step 4: Describe the change

Type your instruction in plain English. Some examples:

  • "Make this button teal with rounded-xl corners and larger padding"
  • "Rewrite this hero headline to be more direct and punchy, max 8 words"
  • "Add a subtle gradient background to this section, dark purple to dark blue"
  • "Replace this image with a placeholder that maintains the same dimensions"

Hit Enter or click Send. The AI processes your request and streams the edited HTML back. The diff applies in real time — you see the code update in the left panel and the preview update on the right, simultaneously.

Step 5: Deploy

When you're happy with the result, click Deploy. Your updated HTML is published to your htmlhost.co URL in under 3 seconds. No build step. No config. No CI pipeline. It just works.

Which AI models does it support?

The editor offers the latest models from all three major providers, and the model picker is updated as new ones are released:

Provider Models
OpenAIGPT family
AnthropicClaude family
GoogleGemini family

Every model is labelled with a tier: Lite, Standard or Pro. Every plan can use every model: the free plan includes 10 built-in AI edits a day and Pro gives you 100, with Pro-tier models counting as 2 edits each. You can switch models at any time — or use Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) to plug in your personal API key for unlimited edits.

Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)

BYOK is one of the most powerful features in the editor. Click the ⚙ settings icon in the AI panel, paste your API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, and you're done. Your key is saved only in your browser's local storage. When you use it, the request passes through htmlhost's proxy to the provider, and the key is never stored or logged.

This means:

  • Unlimited AI edits at your own API cost
  • Access to the latest models as soon as they're released
  • Your key is never stored on our servers

Full-page vs. element edits: how the AI decides

The editor automatically determines the right scope for each edit:

  • Element edit: When you select a specific element and describe a targeted change, only that element's HTML (plus its parent context) is sent to the AI. This is fast and precise.
  • Full-page edit: If your instruction is structural — "reorganize the layout", "add a new section between hero and features", "change the overall color scheme" — the editor detects this and sends the full page context to the AI.

This automatic scoping is one of the key reasons the AI edits are accurate. A model that only sees one button can focus entirely on making that button right. A model that always gets the full page struggles with precision.

The Monaco editor underneath

The code panel uses Monaco Editor — the same engine that powers VS Code. This isn't a stripped-down textarea. You get:

  • Syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Bracket pair colorization
  • Auto-closing brackets and quotes
  • Find & Replace with regex support
  • Format on paste and format on type
  • File path autocomplete within multi-page projects
  • Ctrl+click navigation between linked project files

You can always edit the code directly. The AI panel and the code editor are peers, not in a hierarchy — use whichever is faster for what you're trying to do.
