How to Clone Any Website in Seconds with htmlhost
You found a landing page that looks exactly like what you need. The layout is right, the typography is clean, and the spacing is chef's-kiss perfect. You just need your content in there.
With htmlhost's URL cloner, you can grab a pixel-perfect copy of any public webpage — CSS, images, fonts, and all — in a single click. Then edit it, make it yours, and deploy it. The whole thing takes seconds.
Here's how it works.
Step 1: Open the Editor
Head to htmlhost.co/new and sign in to your Pro account. You'll land on the editor — the same place you normally paste or write HTML.
Step 2: Clone from URL
You have two ways to trigger the cloner:
- Paste a URL directly. Copy a website URL and paste it straight into the editor (Cmd+V / Ctrl+V). htmlhost detects that it's a URL and automatically kicks off the clone process.
- Use the "Clone from URL" button. In the file drop zone, click Clone from URL, type or paste the target URL, and hit Enter (or click Clone).
That's it. htmlhost's server fetches the page, discovers every linked asset, downloads them all, and delivers a fully self-contained HTML file back to your editor.
Step 3: Review & Edit
Once the clone finishes, you'll see a results summary showing you exactly what was imported — how many assets were fetched, how many were inlined, and whether anything was skipped. The cloned page is now live in your editor with full preview.
From here you can:
- Edit the HTML directly in the code editor
- Use AI visual editing — click any element and describe the change you want in plain English
- Swap out text, images, colors, and branding
- Strip sections you don't need
Step 4: Deploy
Happy with your version? Hit Deploy. You'll get a live URL on *.htmlhost.co in under 3 seconds. Share it, embed it, connect a custom domain — whatever you need.
What Gets Cloned?
The cloner is thorough. It captures:
| Asset Type | What Happens |
|---|---|
| CSS stylesheets | Downloaded and inlined into <style> tags so the page is fully self-contained |
| JavaScript | Non-module scripts are downloaded and inlined into <script> tags |
| Images | All <img>, srcset, CSS background-image, OG images, favicons — uploaded to your media library |
| Fonts | Custom web fonts (WOFF2, WOFF, TTF, EOT) referenced in CSS are captured |
| Nested CSS assets | url() references inside CSS files (background images, font files) are recursively discovered and fetched |
| Lazy-loaded images | data-src, data-lazy-src, data-srcset attributes are all picked up |
| Next.js images | /_next/image optimized URLs are resolved back to the original source |
All URLs in the HTML and CSS are rewritten to use local relative paths, so the cloned page works entirely on its own — no dependency on the original server.
Use Cases
🚀 Rapid Prototyping Under Tight Deadlines
Client says "I want something like this site" and points you to a URL. Instead of rebuilding from scratch, clone it, swap the content and branding, and present a working prototype in minutes. Perfect for pitch decks, proof-of-concepts, and "can you make it look like this?" requests.
🎓 Learning & Reference
See a beautiful layout technique and want to understand how it's built? Clone the page and inspect the markup at your own pace. No DevTools gymnastics — you get the actual source files to tinker with.
📸 Archiving & Snapshots
Need to preserve a webpage exactly as it looks today? Clone it and deploy it on htmlhost as a permanent snapshot. Great for legal evidence, compliance records, or saving a portfolio piece before the original goes offline.
🔄 Migration Starting Points
Moving a site from an old platform? Clone the existing pages as a starting point, then progressively update the HTML with your new design system. Beats starting from a blank file.
🧪 A/B Testing & Variants
Clone your own live page, make a variation, deploy it on a separate URL, and test which version performs better. Quick, zero-risk experimentation.
Tips for Best Results
- Use the full URL — include the protocol (
https://). htmlhost will auto-prepend it if you forget, but being explicit avoids ambiguity. - Clone specific pages, not SPAs — the cloner works best on server-rendered pages. Single-page apps (React, Vue, Angular) that render entirely client-side may come out empty since the HTML source doesn't contain the actual content.
- Check the results modal — after every clone, htmlhost shows you a detailed summary. If some assets failed (rate-limited, requires auth), you'll know exactly which ones.
- Combine with AI editing — after cloning, use the AI visual editor to make changes by describing them in natural language. "Change the hero heading to say Welcome" is all it takes.
Limits & Fair Use
- HTML pages up to 5 MB
- Individual assets up to 20 MB
- Total asset download capped at 50 MB per clone
- Up to 500 distinct assets per page
- Private/internal URLs (localhost, 192.168.x.x, etc.) are blocked for security
These limits cover the vast majority of real-world pages. If a page exceeds them, the clone still works — it just skips the oversized assets and tells you which ones were left out.
