htmlhost vs Cloudflare Pages

Cloudflare Pages is fast, generous and backed by one of the world's largest networks. It's also a developer tool: forms mean writing Functions, access control means configuring Zero Trust, and every edit is a new upload. If you want a Cloudflare Pages alternative built around editing and running an HTML site in the browser, here is how htmlhost compares.

Choose htmlhost if you want to publish HTML from the browser, edit it visually or with AI later, receive form messages without code, and protect a site with a password. Free: 3 sites, 500 MB of storage, 50 form messages a month, 10 AI edits a day, sites that never expire by default.

In depth

Where Cloudflare Pages and htmlhost differ

Generous limits, developer-shaped workflow

Cloudflare's free plan is famously generous: unlimited sites, seats, requests and bandwidth for static content, and 500 builds a month. Single files can be up to 25 MiB and a free site can hold 20,000 files.

It's designed for people who already think in deployments. You create an application inside the Workers & Pages dashboard, choose Git or Direct Upload, and every change produces a new deployment. Drag-and-drop uploads are capped at 1,000 files, can't compile a functions folder, and Cloudflare notes that a Direct Upload project can't be switched to Git integration later.

htmlhost is shaped around the site rather than the deployment: the published site is an editable project, so most changes happen in the editor and go live with Publish.

Forms and passwords take engineering on Cloudflare

Cloudflare has no form inbox. Its official Static Forms plugin intercepts submissions from forms marked with a data-static-form-name attribute and hands them to your Pages Function, where you decide what to do: store them in KV, call an email API, and so on. That requires a Functions setup, which drag-and-drop projects can't compile.

Restricting access goes through Cloudflare Access, part of Zero Trust (free for up to 50 users). The one-click access policy in Pages protects preview deployments only, not your pages.dev or custom domain; protecting production needs an Access application configured separately.

On htmlhost, forms work on every plan with an inbox, email delivery and a spam trap, and Pro adds a simple password per site. If a Pro pass ends, sites stay online at their htmlhost.co addresses.

Watch out forEnabling Pages' access policy doesn't lock down your live site: Cloudflare's docs say it protects preview deployments and not the *.pages.dev domain or custom domain.

Pages vs Workers: the platform is moving

Cloudflare's Pages documentation now opens with a question: "Are you sure you want to use Pages? Workers supports most Pages use cases and offers a broader feature set… Start new projects with Workers." Workers static assets carry the same 20,000-file and 25 MiB limits on Free.

For developers that's a richer platform. For someone who just wants an HTML page online, it's another layer of choices before the first publish.

Where Cloudflare clearly wins

Unlimited static bandwidth on a free plan, a free custom domain, Git builds, and serverless code at the edge with storage products alongside. If you're a developer and your site gets heavy traffic, Cloudflare is a superb home and htmlhost doesn't pretend otherwise.

TipMany teams use both: build and run the app on Cloudflare, and hand marketing or client pages to people who edit them on htmlhost.
An honest verdict

Cloudflare Pages or htmlhost: which should you choose?

Choose Cloudflare Pages if…

  • You're a developer who wants unlimited static bandwidth on a free plan.
  • You need Git builds, edge Functions, KV, D1 or R2.
  • You already manage DNS and security in Cloudflare.
  • Your team can configure Zero Trust for access control.

Choose htmlhost if…

  • You want to publish from the browser and edit without re-uploading.
  • You need contact forms delivered to an inbox and email with no code.
  • You want a simple password on a client preview.
  • The people updating the site aren't developers.
Is Cloudflare Pages free?

Yes. Cloudflare's free plan includes unlimited sites, seats, static requests and bandwidth, with 500 builds a month, 25 MiB per file and 20,000 files per site. Pages Functions requests count toward the Workers free quota.

Does Cloudflare Pages have forms?

There's no form inbox. Cloudflare publishes a Static Forms plugin for Pages Functions that intercepts submissions so your code can store or forward them. htmlhost forms deliver to a dashboard inbox and email without code.

Can I password-protect a Cloudflare Pages site?

Through Cloudflare Access, which is identity-based and free for up to 50 users. The access policy toggle in Pages protects preview deployments only; protecting the production domain needs a separate Access application. htmlhost Pro includes a simple site password.

Should I use Cloudflare Pages or Workers?

Cloudflare's own documentation recommends starting new projects with Workers, which supports most Pages use cases. If you only need to publish and edit HTML, htmlhost avoids that decision entirely.

How do I edit a Cloudflare Pages site?

Edit your files locally, then push to Git or upload a new deployment. With Direct Upload you re-upload the project. On htmlhost you edit the live site in a visual or code editor, or with AI, and press Publish.
