htmlhost vs Neocities

Neocities is a wonderful corner of the web: free, ad-free hosting for hand-made sites, with an HTML editor in the browser. If your site needs a custom domain, forms, or files and scripts its free plan doesn't allow, here's how htmlhost compares as a Neocities alternative.

htmlhost vs Neocities: the short answer

Choose Neocities for a personal, hand-coded site in a creative community, especially if 1 GB and its file-type list cover what you need. Choose htmlhost if you need forms, a visual or AI editor, password-protected previews, or a custom domain without a monthly subscription ($5/yr each on Free). Free: 3 sites, 500 MB of storage, 50 form messages a month, 10 AI edits a day, sites that never expire by default.

In depth

Where Neocities and htmlhost differ

What the free plans really include

Neocities Free is generous on space: 1 GB of storage and 200 GB of bandwidth a month (soft limits, so temporary surges are fine), with no advertising, ever. It's one site at yourname.neocities.org with HTTPS.

htmlhost Free gives you 3 sites and 500 MB, plus things Neocities doesn't offer at any price: built-in forms (50 form messages a month), a visual editor and AI Edit (10 AI edits a day). Free sites carry a small htmlhost footer banner; Pro, or a connected custom domain, removes it.

The limits that matter for a real site

Several Neocities restrictions only lift with Supporter ($5 a month): custom domains, the file-type allow-list (MP3 and MP4 aren't allowed, for example), hotlinking, CORS, and a less strict content security policy that allows scripts to call other servers. That last one matters if your page loads data from an API or posts a form with JavaScript.

On htmlhost these aren't plan features. Any web file type can be uploaded on every plan, scripts can call other servers, and a custom domain is $5/yr each on Free or included on Pro.

Watch out forOn Neocities Free, audio and video files such as MP3 and MP4 aren't on the allowed list, so a portfolio with a showreel would need Supporter or another host for the media.

Editing: code editor vs visual and AI

Neocities has a built-in HTML editor on both plans, which is great if you enjoy writing markup by hand. You find the text in the code and change it.

htmlhost has a code editor too, and adds a visual editor (click a heading to retype it, drag sections, swap images) and AI Edit, where you describe the change and review it before publishing.

An honest verdict

Neocities or htmlhost: which should you choose?

Choose Neocities if…

  • You're building a personal, hand-coded site for the fun of it.
  • You value a creative community and an ad-free policy.
  • 1 GB and the allowed file types cover your site, and you don't need a domain.

Choose htmlhost if…

  • Your site needs a contact form or other form.
  • You want a custom domain without a monthly subscription.
  • Your pages use audio, video or scripts that call other servers.
  • You'd rather edit visually or with AI than in code.
Can I use a custom domain on Neocities for free?

No. Custom domains require Neocities Supporter at $5 a month. On htmlhost a free account can connect a domain for $5/yr each, and Pro includes unlimited domains.

What file types does Neocities allow?

Free sites use an allow-list covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, common image formats, fonts, Markdown, text, CSV, XML, PDF and similar. MP3 and MP4 aren't allowed. Supporter removes the allow-list. htmlhost accepts any web file type on every plan.

Does Neocities support forms?

No. Neocities is static hosting only, and its free plan's security policy blocks scripts from calling other servers. htmlhost forms deliver to a dashboard inbox and email.

Is htmlhost ad-free like Neocities?

htmlhost shows no ads, but free sites carry a small htmlhost footer banner. Pro, or a connected custom domain, removes it.
